Katsushika Hokusai spent ninety years on earth and claimed he didn't truly understand art until he was seventy-three. The result was one of the most prolific and influential bodies of work in history — woodblock prints so precise, so compositionally perfect, that Western artists from Monet to Van Gogh openly studied and borrowed from them. His Great Wave off Kanagawa is arguably the single most reproduced image in Japanese art history, a wall of churning water framing Mount Fuji in the distance that somehow manages to be simultaneously terrifying and serene.
